There are many theories about the historical origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, the most well-known of which is to commemorate the ancient patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a noble and poet in the state of Chu during the Warring States period. Because he was worried about the country and the people, he finally threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. According to legend, when the local people learned that Qu Yuan had thrown into the river, they were very sad and rowed out to look for his body. In order to prevent fish and shrimp from eating Qu Yuan's body, people put zongzi (glutinous rice food wrapped in bamboo leaves) in the river. Since then, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year, there has been the custom of rowing dragon boats and eating zongzi.
